Organizations Ladies' Society Since the founding of St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Ladies Society has assisted in all aspects of parish life, including religious, fellowship, social and fund-raising. Over the years the society has been an active group with membership spanning the generations of our parish family. The purpose of the Ladies Society is to develop a spirit of Christian leadership, awareness and commitment among women throughout the parish, to instill a sense of fellowship, and a deeper understanding of the heritage and traditions of the Archdiocese and the church, as well as to foster a genuine expression of love and service through works of charity. The Ladies Society hosts many activities throughout the year including prayer meetings, business meetings, spiritual retreats, the Debutante Ball, bake sales, luncheons, coffee hours. In fact, a major portion of the social activities planned for the entire parish family are arranged by the ladies. The women of the Ladies Society work very hard for the benefit of the Cathedral and the Archdiocese, accomplishing their work with their hearts directed and attuned to Christ our God. The Fellowship of St. John the Divine The
current operating structure (inclusive of various Sub-group divisions)
for The Fellowship of St. John the Divine here at St. Nicholas Cathedral
will be as follows:
Church School/Youth Department The Church School/Youth Department is very dedicated to the scriptural command of helping our parents "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) The Church School is a support system for our parents. It seeks to reinforce the parental example and teaching of strong moral values, which are vital for our children's success and salvation in today's world. It also provides the opportunity for establishing and developing personal relationships, which in turn help to strengthen the community life of our Church. Through the Church School and Youth Department, our young people are able to learn more of the Holy Orthodox Faith and how to apply it in their everyday life. Thus it has become a system by which St. Nicholas Cathedral can minister to entire families and include nearly every age group, providing Christian education from pre-school to young adults. The Church School calendar year is full of many activities that range from regular staff meetings to Children's Sermons, from Graduation picnics to helping with Kid's Club. Through the Church School our young people have excelled in the last several years at the Western Region Convention youth competitions, winning top awards in the Bible Bowls, Creative Writings, etc. We have also added new traditions to the Cathedral, such as the presentation services of both the Church School girls and boys, done respectively for the Feast of the Presentation of the Theotokos in the Temple and for the Feast of the Meeting of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple. Our Youth Department of Church School has also worked hard to provide various activities that would develop our teens spiritually, as well as socially, through such activities as the Pan-Orthodox Bible Bowl, the Lenten Retreats, "fireside chats," the Walk-A-Thon for Project Mexico, bowling and skiing trips, to name just a few. Our Church School realizes that its efforts must bolster and support, but never replace, the two main ways all our children learn their faith - that is in the daily life of our homes and in the liturgical and sacramental life of our Cathedral community. In order to allow our young people and the Church School Staff to participate fully within the Liturgy and to always receive Christ through both the Sermon and the Holy Eucharist, the Church School now begins promptly after Communion each week. May God continue to bless the efforts and good works of the Church School/Youth Department staff and students. Parish Council The Cathedral derives its ecclesiastical authority from the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. All the administrative authority of the Cathedral is vested in the Pastor and the Parish Council. The Clergy, Parish Council, Committees and Organizations act and officiate according to the constitution and the by-laws of Saint Nicholas Cathedral. They provide and facilitate the means for worship and religious education to all the parishioners. The Parish Council, however, is the representative of the Cathedral in administration of its properties and affairs. |
