Welcome To St. Nicholas Cathedral

The history of the Cathedral located in Los Angeles, California, is truly a story of people of vision, courage, dedication, leadership and religious conviction. It is the story of the needs of many Orthodox families who had settled in the greater Los Angeles area since the turn of the twentieth century. It is a story of those who had devoted their lives to the service of our community, of leaders who are no longer with us but who shall always remain dear in our hearts because of their wisdom, love and accomplishments. Their legacy continues today.

Services for the Dormition

We serve the Paraklesis at 6:30 p.m.  الباراكليسي

Aug. 10 (mostly Arabic Ø§Ù„نص بالعربي) 
Aug. 12 (mostly English service text), during this Dormition fast. 

It is a special service of supplica­tion to the Mother of God.

We will remember those who are sick and suffering here and abroad. Please bring a list of the first names of the sick and of any other living people in need of prayer for any reason, to be remembered at the Supplication. We will also anoint everyone present with myrrh from the empty tomb of the Theotokos.

August 15: Feast of the Dormition Potluck

The St. Nicholas Family is invited to share in a Potluck Dinner to break the fast on Saturday, August 15, to celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The potluck will take place directly after the Divine Liturgy.

Please join us for Liturgy and Lunch; bring your favorite dish to serve 15 people. If your last name begins with:

  • A-G, please bring drinks, bread, olives, fruit or dessert.
  • H-M, please bring salad or side dish or any type.
  • N-Z, please bring a main dish.

(Note that we cycle who is assigned to bring what each time we do a potluck.)

ST. PAUL'S SECOND LETTER TO THE CORINTHIANS 5:15-21
Brethren, Christ died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once regarded Christ from a human point of view, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
MARK 1:16-22
At that time, Jesus, passing along by the Sea of Galilee, saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boats mending the nets. And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him. And they went into Capernaum; and immediately on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
